WEBINAR: Do Micro- and Nanoplastics Cause Oxidative Stress? Insights from Human Placental Cells and ToxTracker
Join us to explore the challenges of assessing micro- and nanoplastic toxicity in human placental cells and the role of complementary approaches such as ToxTracker.
Microplastic and nanoplastic particles (MNPs) originate from the fragmentation or degradation of larger plastic products. MNPs can now be found throughout the environment, food, water, and even human tissues. Growing evidence that these particles can reach and cross the placental barrier has raised important questions about their potential impact on reproductive health and fetal development.
But how do we determine whether MNPs are actually causing harmful cellular effects?
In this webinar, we will share exploratory research investigating the uptake of micro- and nanoplastics and their potential to induce oxidative stress in human placental cells. The work also highlights an important challenge in MNP toxicity testing: can fluorescence-based assays distinguish genuine biological responses from assay interference caused by the particles themselves?
To address this question, further mechanistic evaluation was performed using complementary approaches, including the ToxTracker reporter assay to independently assess oxidative stress- and genotoxicity-related pathways.
Key learning points
- How MNP uptake and oxidative stress responses can be investigated in human placental cells
- The challenges of using fluorescence-based assays when testing MNPs
- What the role of oxidative stress in MNP toxicity is
- How ToxTracker and complementary approaches can help distinguish biological responses from potential assay interference
