Working at Toxys Inc. as a Director of BD & Sales

Name: Daniel J Roberts
Role: Director BD & Sales
With Toxys since: 2022
Background: Toxicology
From: USA
Can you give us a brief description of your role at Toxys?
Stationed in the USA, my primary responsibility is to grow the business domestically, through education and sales support. This includes attending conferences (with and without booth duties), scheduling meetings with current and prospective clients, presenting posters/speaking at the podium, and general quoting activities.

Tell us about your educational background and previous experiences.
I’ve been in the genetic toxicology field for 20 years, with experience at CROs and pharma, mostly as a Study Director or Principal Investigator. While working full time, I earned a MS from Johns Hopkins, and was a PhD candidate in the Toxicology program at Rutgers University. I have been fortunate to have the opportunities to work within HESI’s Genetic Toxicology Testing Committee (GTTC), the Genetic Toxicology Association (GTA), the international working group on Genetic Toxicology (IWGT), and the Environmental Mutagensis and Genomics Society (EMGS).
When and how did you join Toxys?
I joined Toxys in October 2022, after meeting Giel and Paula in Ottawa Canada at an International Congress on Environmental Mutagensis (ICEM). After a few conversations, we thought it would be a good fit, and I haven’t looked back since!
In your opinion, what is the best thing about working at Toxys?
Even though we are growing, the nimbleness of a small company has always been appealing – being able to make decisions quickly and act swiftly without large, complicated reporting hierarchies is great.
Finish this sentence: At Toxys, we always…
…do great science!
What kind of methods or tools do you regularly use?
In sales, we use Customer Relationship Management tools to manage prospective clients and transfer projects from the sales funnel to operations. Other tools include LinkedIn, non-profit scientific resources such as membership databases, and conference registration lists to find relevant leads. All we really need is a laptop and some gusto to be successful.

What are the roles of other people whom you often collaborate with?
I collaborate with other sales managers and agents within the organization to ensure we are aligned. Also, constant communication with the lab is important to source fresh case studies and understand lead times. Considering we act as a flat organization, it really is a team effort, connecting and collaborating across all internal roles.
What are the most challenging and rewarding things about your work?
The most challenging is finding new customers who would benefit from our approaches but haven’t yet thought to integrate mode of action determinations in their testing strategies. The most rewarding is when we get a new client, and they see the power of the tools we offer. It’s a great feeling to help people out.
What is the impact your work has on what a customer receives?
In sales, I believe we set the tone, as generally we are the first line of contact. Although our reports are our “product”, setting a collaborative tone helps establish a level of comfort, that then trickles into project journeys.
Is there any occasion in your work you can think of that was out of ordinary?
Well, my first ACT meeting was with Toxys. On Sunday, when we only had booth set up in the PM, I came down at 8 AM wearing a full suit, laptop ready. Giel and Paula looked at me like I had 3 arms, as it was the weekend. So, I went and changed, and we had a wonderful hike in Denver. Mixing in healthy activities and enjoying free time together was something new for this American corporate guy.

What do you like to do when you are not at work?
My free time is spent raising twins and 2 golden retrievers with my wife, whom I started dating when we were 15 years old. Right now, my daughter has frequent basketball tournaments and in the spring they both play soccer, so we can be found in a random gymnasium or out on the fields if not walking/playing with the dogs.
Is there a fun fact about you that you would like to share?
When I was 15 years old, one of the bands I was in got signed to a compilation out of Deep Elm Records. It was pretty cool, they paid us in CDs (for those who remember what they are), and instead of selling them at our shows, we mostly gave them away to friends and family.
